Explore Ride 4 was more than just a journey โ it was a challenge, a celebration, and a deep dive into Western Odishaโs rich landscapes. From the bustling roads of Bhubaneswar to the historic, forest-flanked city of Sambalpur, this long-distance ride was one of BBOโs most anticipated and memorable adventures.
๐ Ride Overview
Starting Point: Bhubaneswar
Destination: Sambalpur City
Distance: ~320 km (one way)
Ride Duration: 7โ8 hours (including breaks)
Terrain: Highways, forest curves, and regional bypasses
Highlight: Longest Explore Ride yet, with diverse landscapes, dam views, and cultural pit stops
๐ Early Morning Throttle
With engines humming under the stars, the BBO squad assembled before dawn. This ride needed endurance, focus, and rhythm. After a short briefing and warm-up stretches, we set off in proper staggered formation. Headlights cut through the morning mist as we left city traffic behind and entered the open stretch of NH-55.
The highway was smooth, peppered with occasional fog. Our pack of machines moved like a disciplined convoy. We crossed Khurda, Dhenkanal, and Angul with short hydration breaks. The scenery gradually shifted โ from city zones to dense tree lines and open valleys.
๐ Ride Through the Wild
The highlight of the route was the forested area between Boinda and Redhakhol. Dense sal forests, winding roads, and clear skies created a cinematic ride experience. Some parts were chilly and shadowed, others sunlit and peaceful. Rider focus increased, helmets down, eyes on the curves โ this was pure riding bliss.
We took a longer stop at a hill viewpoint near Redhakhol, sipping tea and capturing aerial shots. Nature lovers in the group were amazed by the terrain โ undisturbed forest and rolling hills as far as the eye could see.
๐ Arrival in Sambalpur
By early afternoon, we entered the vibrant city of Sambalpur โ home of the Hirakud Dam, Sambalpuri culture, and heritage temples. Riding through the cityโs mix of old charm and new energy was a treat. Locals greeted us with curiosity and smiles, and many waved as our group passed.
๐ Visit to Hirakud Dam
Our first stop was the iconic Hirakud Dam โ one of the worldโs longest earthen dams. The massive reservoir on one side and the mighty Mahanadi on the other created a visual contrast like no other. We parked safely and walked along the dam stretch. The scale, the breeze, and the story behind this structure left many of us speechless.
๐ฝ๏ธ Local Lunch & Rest
For lunch, we tried authentic Sambalpuri thalis at a local dhaba โ rice, dalma, saag, and fish curry were crowd favorites. The hospitality was warm, and the food โ just what we needed. Post-lunch, we spent time resting under shaded trees, chatting with locals, and exploring nearby lakeside spots.
๐ธ Clicks, Clips & Rider Bonding
Every member captured moments โ drone shots above Hirakud, slow-motion riding entries, sunset timelapses, and candid smiles. We also interacted with a few young local riders who joined in for a short stretch, eager to learn about BBO and our journey.
๐ Return Ride & Reflections
As the sun began to dip, we geared up for the return. Knowing we had a long stretch ahead, the ride was well-paced. We made two key stops โ one for refueling, the other for snacks and stretching. As night fell, our visibility kits lit up, and the group rode safely back to Bhubaneswar, reaching post-midnight.
