About Satkosia Gorge
Satkosia Gorge is one of Odisha’s most breathtaking natural wonders, carved by the mighty Mahanadi River as it flows between the Eastern Ghats. Stretching over 22 km in length, the gorge is a unique blend of forested cliffs, calm waters, and diverse wildlife. Located across Angul, Boudh, Nayagarh, and Cuttack districts, it forms the core of the Satkosia Tiger Reserve.
For riders and nature lovers, Satkosia offers a wild yet peaceful escape, blending adventurous roads with riverside serenity. Whether it's the call of a distant bird, the sight of a crocodile basking on the banks, or the reflection of tall hills in still water — every moment here is nature in its purest form.
The Ride to Tikarpada
Tikarpada, one of the most popular entry points into Satkosia, lies about 50 km from Angul. The route is smooth, with forest-lined roads and sudden glimpses of the Mahanadi through the trees. As you approach Tikarpada, the elevation drops, and the road curves down toward the riverbank, offering majestic valley views.
The ride is ideal during sunrise or sunset, with golden light filtering through the dense sal and teak forests. Riders often stop for photography or just to breathe in the fresh jungle air.
Wildlife & Nature
Satkosia is home to a rich variety of flora and fauna. The area was declared a tiger reserve in 2007 and shelters species such as leopards, wild dogs, elephants, sloth bears, and many kinds of deer. But the real stars here are the river-dwelling gharial crocodiles and mugger crocodiles that you can spot along the banks near Tikarpada.
Bird lovers are in for a treat too — with regular sightings of hornbills, kingfishers, serpent eagles, and many migratory birds, especially in winter.
Experiences at Tikarpada
Once you reach Tikarpada, you can enjoy boat rides on the Mahanadi, forest walks, and eco-tourism cottages maintained by the forest department. The Nature Camp at Tikarpada offers a chance to stay overnight in tents and cottages surrounded by forest sounds. Campfires, guided treks, and evening riverside views create a memory-rich experience for every nature rider.
There's a designated crocodile enclosure nearby, where forest officials breed and conserve the rare gharial species. Visitors can observe these reptiles safely and learn about conservation efforts.

How to Reach
Tikarpada is about 190 km from Bhubaneswar via Angul. Riders can take the NH-55 to Angul and then turn toward Tikarpada. From Cuttack or Dhenkanal, alternate forest routes are also available. Roads are well-paved until the forest gate. Entry beyond certain points requires a permit issued by the Forest Department.
It’s advisable to carry basic supplies, fuel up at Angul, and ride during daylight hours. Mobile networks are limited inside the reserve, enhancing the disconnect-from-chaos experience.
Best Time to Visit
October to March is the best time to explore Satkosia, with cool weather, active wildlife, and pleasant river conditions. Avoid peak monsoon months (July–September) as the area becomes slippery and risky due to flooding and landslides.
Conclusion: Into the Jungle, By the River
Satkosia Gorge and Tikarpada offer one of the most enriching rides in Odisha — a journey where roads twist through the wilderness and every stop brings you closer to nature’s raw essence. It’s not about speed here; it’s about silence, reflection, and respect for the forest. For riders seeking both thrill and tranquility, this route delivers memories that echo like the roar of the river in the hills.
